Szeged Jewish Community

The Szeged Jewish Community plays a central role in the religious and cultural life of the local Jewish population. In addition to religious events and holidays, it organizes various cultural programs, including literary, musical, and theatrical evenings. Today, out of nearly 300 Jewish citizens of Szeged, fewer than 100 are contributing members of the community. The current religious leader is Attila Kendrusz, while the secular presidency has been held by István Buk since May 2019.

Archive of the Szeged Jewish Community

The Szeged Jewish Community Archive (SZZSHA) preserves the remaining documents of the Szeged Jewish Community, which was founded in 1785, along with records from its surrounding district. The initial categorization of these documents was carried out in the 2000s by the Yad Vashem Hungarian Research Group, with the participation of Judit Molnár and Kinga Frojimovics.By 2024, the physical establishment, conservation, and organization of the collection had been completed. Currently, all archived materials are stored in acid-free archival boxes on designated shelves within a dedicated space. The archive remains open to new contributions, continuously receiving additional documents from both local and distant Szeged Jewish residents.A significant development is the formal establishment of the archive’s official framework, which will soon allow it to operate as a branch archive of the Hungarian Jewish Museum and Archives.
